Canada Day in Whistler Concert Series

Starting this Friday the Village of Whistler will be hosting the Canada Day in Whistler Concert Series. Beginning Friday and running through Sunday, each day will feature a new artist taking the Olympic Plaza Stage at 8:30PM. This year's artists include Jim Byrnes and Sojourners, Dan Mangan, Alex Cuba and Fred Penner. Below is the performance day and quick Bio on each artist.

Friday, June 29 - 8:30PM

Local Vancouverite Dan Mangan has managed to make quite the name for himself lately. The folksy singer who is currently touring across Canada was recently featured on the short list for the Polaris Music Prize. This along with his recent iTunes Album of the Year in the singer songwriter category and Trio of CBC awards have made Dan both a commercial & critical success. Coming off supporting gigs for The Walkmen & Decemberists, Dan is featured in many of the summer festivals throughout Canada and Europe this summer but in between gigs he's managed to make a stop in his backyard this Friday night at the Olympic Plaza.

Saturday, June 30 - 8:30PM

Cuban born singer songwriter Alex Cuba takes the stage Saturday night in what promises to be a musical treat. Born just 1 hour west of Havana, Alex has traveled across the world eventually finding himself laying roots in Smithers B.C. Alex's music follows his geographical journey throughout the world taking pieces from every place he's stopped along the way. His beautiful sugarcane melodies and Latin infused voice allow him to create his own niche in this sometimes cookie cutter industry. Join him Saturday night as he takes the stage in what is sure to be an unforgettable musical experience.

Sunday, July 1 - 2:30PM

The first of two Sunday shows kicks off with Canadian Television icon Fred Penner. Fred Penner originally graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in economics and phychology a far cry from the music scene. But when he spent time working with mentally and physically challenged children he began to use his music as a comforting tool. This led to an interest in a career in Children's music to help spread meaningful and hopeful messages through music. Something he did for over 15 years on his CBC television show Fred Penner's Place. Now Fred Penner takes the stage this Sunday 2:30PM at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

Sunday, July 1 - 8:30PM

Born in St. Louis Missouri Jim Byrnes has been singing the blues since he was knee high. By age 5 he had started playing piano and by 13 he had taken to singing and strumming the blues guitar. Byrnes earliest memories were sneaking into the many music clubs surrounding the St. Louis area. By 1964 Byrnes played his first professional gig, this would begin a long illustrious touring career. After years of touring and drifting Byrnes moved to Vancouver B.C where he became a staple of the local music scene. 40 years in the music industry including numerous awards and accolades, Byrnes and his band will be taking centre stage this Sunday. As the final act of the Canada Day Concert Series Byrnes will be treating the crowd to his Southern Blues style of music. Make sure to join us this Sunday as Jim Byrnes and Sojourners take the stage to close out the Canada Day Festivities
