How to Plan a Budget Friendly Whistler Vacation
Posted: Tuesday, November 26, 2013
More than two million people visit Whistler each year in order to experience the magic and beauty of the mountains, lakes, and forests that surround our little resort town. With numerous places to dine, shop, and dance as well as enjoy numerous outdoor and indoor activities, Whistler is an ideal place to visit for a longer vacation or quick getaway. The best thing is that you don't have to squander all your savings on this one trip. There are many ways to stay on budget and still make the most out of your winter vacation.
Set a Budget
It's very important to create a budget for travel, accomodations, food, activities, and any extras before you start planning your vacation. A good way to allow for more spending at your destination is to cut the costs of flying and drive somewhere closer to home. For residents of British Columbia, Alberta, and Washington State, Whistler is not a long drive or bus ride away and is thus a great choice for a budget-friendly getaway.
If you do a little advance planning you can save quite a lot in the long run. Research online to find the best prices and keep an eye out for special early booking deals and packages. Whistler Blackcomb always has early booking rates on lift tickets, lessons, and rentals. Canadian and Washington State residents can also save on lift tickets, food, and shopping with an Edge card. If you haven't gotten one yet don't worry - the deadline has just been extended until December 1st. It also helps if you know what you're going to need ahead of time so you can look for package deals that bundle everything together for much lower price.
Social media is all the craze these days and can also be a great tool for saving money. Many local businesses have specials and promotions for Facebook Fans or Twitter followers so it's worth taking a look and seeing what's out there. For example, all Facebook Fans of the Village 8 Cinemas are entitled to a FREE popcorn coupon. Also, all of our Social Insiders get half-price parking, access to exclusive room rates and are automatically eligibility for free upgrades on arrival. Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with all of our Social Insider deals and discounts.
Eating in the village or on the mountain can get very expensive, very quickly. One of the best ways to save money is to buy groceries, pack lunches, and cook most other meals yourself. To do that, you must ensure that you stay in a hotel room or condo that has a kitchen. Usually, rooms with kitchens are a little more expensive than those without. However, if you factor in the cost of eating out three times a day multiplied by the number of people in your group, it usually costs less if you dish out the extra cash and stay somewhere that has a kitchen. Fortunately, the Adara Hotel offers a select number of rooms with full kitchens that cost only slightly more than our regular one bedroom suites. You should also know that groceries in Whistler can be expensive so Squamish is an ideal place to stop and stock up on food before you arrive.
Avoid the Rush
Lift tickets and accommodations are a lot less expensive when you visit at the very beginning or end of the season. You should definitely avoid booking your vacation for Christmas, March break, and Easter when the lift lines will be extremely long and the prices for everything will be at their highest. The lowest rates are during the spring and fall but if you want to come for a ski vacation, it's best to come between now and Christmas or else after Easter.
Finally, it never hurts to ask. Many places, including the Adara Hotel, offer special rates for AAA/CAA members, seniors, and returning guests. When you call to make your reservation, don't hesitate to ask about any special rates you might be eligible for. After you arrive, be sure to ask our front desk staff for discount savings cards to local shops and restaurants as well as free VIP entry cards to some of the hottest nightclubs in town. We are more than happy to help you get the best deals in town as well as suggest local spots that will help you save even more!
