Whistler Golf Club announces $1.2 million course improvement
Whistler, B.C. - Tourism Whistler announced today that the Whistler Golf Club will be introducing a new hole for the 2007 season as part of a $1.2 million course improvement project.
In preparation for the installation of a leading-edge irrigation system, a temporary new hole known as "Arnie's Extra" was constructed last summer. Arnie's Extra will be opened as other holes are closed during the installation of the new irrigation system - ensuring that there will be 18 holes of golf in play at the Whistler Golf Club all season.
"We built the new hole in July and August of 2006, knowing that this would provide us with necessary flexibility moving into the 2007 season," said Alan Kristmanson, Director of Golf for the Whistler Golf Club. "Being able to open Arnie's Extra as we're working on the fairway irrigation lines in July and August will allow us to get the installation done quicker while also ensuring guests continue to enjoy the exceptional golf experience they've come to expect at the Whistler Golf Club."
Arnie's Extra is a par three, 165-yard hole with the green sitting between the first lake by the16th hole and Crabapple Creek. The hole will use the existing elevated left tee decks of the 16th hole, providing access to the now famous course view of the surrounding mountains. The location of the green directly behind the lake will make for a challenging addition to the outstanding offerings at the Whistler Golf Club.
The installation of new irrigation lines, which will occur Monday to Friday until completion, will not require any fairway digging as the new lines will be pulled in to replace existing lines. Using the latest technology, the new system employs independent head controls which conserve water by targeting only those areas in need of irrigation.
The Whistler Golf Club is scheduled to open for the 2007 season on May 5 with a tentative opening date for the Learning and Performance Centre of April 14.
Located just steps away from Whistler Village, the Arnold Palmer-designed Whistler Golf Club features 18 sprawling fairways surrounded by unparalleled views of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, an award-winning golf shop, and the Learning and Performance Centre which offers a full series of lesson programs. The Whistler Golf Club is a member of Golf Whistler, a collective of four signature golf courses which work in partnership with Tourism Whistler to promote Canada's premiere golf destination.
