Powder days are sacrilegious. For those that worship them, it’s common knowledge that they are elusive. What’s more, getting the fresh lines while they still exist isn’t just a matter of being in the right place at the right time… Okay, okay, maybe that’s part of it. Nonetheless, when powder church commences, you are going to want to be ready. Looking to make the most out of a powder day on Whistler Blackcomb? Here is your checklist for when you have a reservation for one in the white room!
Wake Up Early
We hate to be the bearer of bad news but those fresh lines aren’t going to wait for you. To get the goods, you’re going to have to wake up early…extra early! Grab a coffee and aim to be in line around 7:30 am. You will have to wait but it’s all part of the stoke. And what’s more, you’re sure to be among the first down!
Sort Of Have Friends
Chances are, you’ve heard the saying, “No friends on a powder day.” For starters, sharing the freshies with your buddies lets you relive the magic over an apres beer, the next time your meet up and maybe even for years to come. It’s also a good idea to ride with a group for safety purposes (tree wells, hello!). The real trick to riding pow with your friends is picking the ones with the same objectives. Pace, location, and skill level are all factors to take note of when deciding who will be part of your shred crew.
Snacks, CHECK! Gortex, CHECK! Extra goggles, CHECK! Being properly prepared can be the difference between a day that will go down in history as the best and a day that is, meh, average. Don’t forget to check the temperatures, freezing level, and forecast. Knowing what weather you’re in for is crucial in deciding what gear to wear and what extras are needed in your pack.
Being one of the first to powder surf down Whistler Bowl could be one of the greatest ski moments of your life. As we mentioned before, some of getting the goods can be attributed to luck…and a little effort. Watch the status signs as you upload and check the app frequently. If the light turns green on any of the alpine chairs, make haste and get over there!
Now go forth and make the most out of your powder day! And just remember: cookies, a fireplace, and hot tub are waiting for you at the Adara, Whistler’s boutique ski hotel!
